Gandalf
Gandalf
Gandalf is the symbol of good in The Hobbit. He is shown using his powers for good and the for the advancement of the dwarves. He helped guide Bilbo back to the dwarves when he got lost in the cave. He is very respected for his wisdom and knowledge, as well as his ability to predict the future. He gets Bilbo to embark on his life-changing adventure and becomes a wisdom figure for the dwarves and Bilbo. Gandalf instills a sense of bravery and trust with Bilbo, and that later helps Bilbo in chapter 7, when he leaves the group to travel through Mirkwood.
Gandalf is a central figure in the book, as a mentor and as a friend. His willingness to accompany Bilbo back to his home shows how caring and involved he is with Bilbo's life. He is like a parent or teacher to Bilbo, and helps him learn several core values, such as trust and compassion. He is displayed as a wise man, one who reminds Bilbo of his purpose.
